A DIY dog house succeeds or fails on four decisions: size, material, drainage, and ventilation. Size the interior so your dog can stand, turn and lie flat with a couple of inches spare in every direction. Build from exterior plywood or solid wood, never interior particleboard, which swells the first time it rains. Raise the floor off the ground and give the roof a pitch or drip edge so water sheds away from the doorway. Add a vent near the top of the wall and, in cold climates, line the cavity with rigid foam.
